Of Joliet, Illinois, at Provena Villa Franciscan Nursing Home, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Age 85 years. Preceded in death by his parents Ciriaco and Susana Chavez, two brothers Jack (Norma – deceased)(2005) and Raymond (Christine – deceased) (2010), a sister Florence (Harold – deceased) Bauer (2010) and a nephew Anthony (Rita) Chavez (2010). Born in Michoacán, Mexico. Immigrated to the United States in 1927. Resident of Joliet since 1930. Proud Korean War Army veteran. Member of VFW Stone City Post #2199, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and JJC Alumni. An avid outdoorsman who enjoyed swimming, running, walking and gardening. He enjoyed traveling. In September 1950, was a member of the first group of Joliet draftees inducted into the Army for the Korean War. Joe enjoyed attending ballet and opera performances. He had an extensive collection of books about old classic movie stars as well as many other topics. Many leisure hours were spent reading and listening to classical music by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. Joe always made time available to spoil his nieces and nephews. In 1980, Joe began taking evening and weekend classes at JJC during Spring and Fall semesters. He received an Associate Degree 1992 at the age of 66. Retired from Kerr Glass. Joe was very caring to his family and friends. The family would also like to extend a special appreciation to Dr. Robert S. Schubert, Dr. Nour Kabbani and the staff of Provena Hospice, and Provena Villa Franciscan Nursing Home. Funeral InformationFuneral services will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 9:30 A.M. to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.
