William J. Valkner

September 23, 1941 - January 31, 2010

Of Norway, IL. formerly of Glen Ellen, passed away suddenly at his home in Florida, Sunday, January 31, 2010. Age 68 years.

Survived by his wife and best friend, Darlene, his four children: Maria Giertz, Edward (Danielle) Valkner, John (Barri) Valkner and William (Kris) Valkner.
Eleven grandchildren Stephanie, Nikki, Alex, Jourdan, Morgan, Madison, Max, Gabrielle, Willie, Lindsey and Shea. His father William Valkner and a sister Gloria (Larry) Hickman.

Bill was a graduate of York High School Class of 1959 and attended Elmhurst College where he studied Biology and Botany. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.

He retired last year after more than 45 years as a self-employed nurseryman and custom landscaper who was a master at creating specialty ponds and outdoor railroad gardens. He was fortunate to have his wife as his business partner as well as his traveling partner after retirement. Bill belonged to many clubs and societies throughout his life, most recently a member of the LGB Train Club and the Chicago Area Garden Railroad Society. He will be remembered by all for his many wonderful traits, but mostly for his dedication to family and friends, his willingness to help and give without hesitation, and his extremely high morals, values and integrity.

Funeral Information

A memorial service will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd., Joliet, Saturday, February 6 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services.

Donations Information

In lieu of flowers memorials to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or the Children’s Hospital Sports Program will be appreciated.
