He is survived by his children Timothy, Robert, Linda (David) Pardee, Michael (Julie) McGrath, his grandchildren Samantha (Peter) Johnson, Emily Pardee, Ryan McGrath, Eric McGrath; siblings Florence (the late Lloyd) Douglas, Harry (the late Faye Cameron) McGrath, John (Kathy) McGrath, William (Mary) McGrath, Paul (Chrissy) McGrath, Terry McGrath, beloved sisters-in-law Bridget Pezel and Charline McGrath; also surviving many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family. Raymond (Joanne Harkins) McGrath, Anna Bride (Ron) Dermody, Mary Gertrude (Avis Davis) McGrath, Thomas F. McGrath and Patrick McGrath. James had a passion for life and deep love for his sisters, brothers, children and grandchildren. He was a great story teller who went out of his way to make people smile and laugh with his jokes and great memories. He was a veteran who loved his country, he sacrificed, cared for and loved all of his family. He lost the love of his life Mary Kate in 2006 and continued his life with his family, grandchildren and his dogs Spuduchi and Penny. He had many interests, including playing the piano and tending to the garden pond with fish. Astronomy was a lifelong passion as he built his own telescope including designing and grinding the lens. He was an avid photographer for many years, from black and white film, then slides and into the digital age. He was as tech savvy as any 86 year old you would meet, using his computer and cameras to construct complex slideshows and movies set to music to pay tribute to family, friends and nature. Jim's pictures and slideshows were always a favorite over the years at the many family celebrations. He touched many with his care and love and will be remembered by all who knew this great man. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet, Office of Development 16555 Weber Road, Crest Hill, IL 60403. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
