Passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Age 84 years.
Bob is survived by his wife of 36 years Laurie Holmquist Farkas, his sisters-in-law Gloria Farkas and Delores Farkas, his mother-in-law Phyllis Holmquist, his brother and sister-in-law Larry and Cindy Holmquist. Survived by many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins. And also his kitty companions Clarybelle, Sadybelle and Zoey.
Preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Majorie (Farkas) and Stephan Palko. Two brothers John and George Farkas. Father-in-law Howard D. Holmquist and two nephews Robert Palko and Russell Farkas.
Born in Joliet, August 6, 1929, to John and Anna (Cipala) Farkas. Bob was raised and educated in Joliet, member of JTHS Class of '47. While in school, he began his association with Oestreich Top Service Company, retiring in 1994 as president and part-owner of Oestreich Sales and Service, Inc. Bob was a proud Korean War veteran having served as SFC in the 955th Field Artillery Battalion of the U. S. Army. He was a member of the V. F.W. Stone City Post #2199 where he had also enjoyed bowling for many years.
Bob always had an interest in and supported Laurie's work in the schools. For over ten years, Bob served as Balloon Chairman for the Will County Council for Exceptional Children's Olympics and in 1986, he was recognized by the state organization with the Meritous Service Award. Bob continued volunteering and assisting with school related events and programs. Upon his retirement from Oestreichs, Bob returned to an earlier job, driving a truck; this time for Coldwater Seed Farm where he was so at-home in his phenomenal garden. Throughout school, church and the neighborhood Bob was known for his gardening and cooking talents and the joy of sharing these and himself with others.
Funeral services will be held at the Carlson Holmquist Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Monday, March 31, at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Tim Linstrom, Pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Rev. Julia Baum-Coldwater officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home or Tender Loving Care (TLC) Animal Shelter or Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital will be appreciated. Private interment services will be held at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.
