Passed away at Lightways Hospice with his family by his side, Monday, August 3, 2026 at the age of 74 years.

Al is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Theresa M. Mejia (nee Gutierrez). Together, Al and Theresa lovingly helped raise several nieces and nephews, as well as their grandchildren, Michael and Madison, who held a very special place in his heart. Survived by his siblings Raymon Mejia, Mary Lou (Juan-deceased) Montoya, Guadalupe (Diego) Martinez, Anthony Mejia, Vincent (Josefina) Mejia, Sally (Rafael) Vieyra, Juana (Alfredo Villegas) Mejia, Abel (Delia) Mejia, Martina (Terry) Estes, Jesse (Leticia) Mejia, Jose (Donna) Mejia, Carolina Mejia, Jorge Mejia and Jaime (Socorro) Mejia. His brothers and sisters-in-law Gilbert (Gloria) Gutierrez, Dan (Sharyn) Gutierrez, Elena (Dwayne) Dolnak, John Gutierrez, Martha Aguirre and Jessie Mejia. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and their wives Richard M. Mejia, Michael Mejia and Richard & Salud “Lula” Mejia.

Al was born on July 24, 1952, in Joliet and received his education in both the U.S. and Mexico. A proud veteran, he served as a 12C-Bridge Crew member in the Illinois Army National Guard for 18 years. His dedication to his country remained an important source of pride throughout his life.

Following nine years of dedicated service, Al retired from Walmart.

Al was a patient and talented model-car enthusiast who especially enjoyed building replicas of 1957 Chevrolets. He took great pride in landscaping and caring for the grounds around his home, could often be found cheering for the Chicago Cubs or enjoyed the quiet challenge of completing jigsaw puzzles. Above all, Al treasured the time he spent with Theresa and their large, close-knit family. Mrs. Mejia would like to especially thank sister-in-law Martina Estes and nephew Ricardo Aguirre for their exceptional support and assistance during her husband's illness.

Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Rd., Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 12:00 P.M. Interment will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday, August 12, 2026 from 9:00 A.M. until time of services.
