In Loving Memory of Benita J. Smith
August 23, 1951 – July 17, 2025
Benita "Bonnie" J. Smith, age 73, of Elwood, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July
17, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on August 23, 1951, in Paris, Illinois, Bonnie was the beloved daughter of the late
Jack and Charlotte Eslinger. Also preceded in death by her sister in law Terry Offerman-
Eslinger. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and
friend whose warmth and kindness touched everyone she met.
Bonnie is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Douglas Smith, and her
cherished children, Jeremy (Tara) Smith and Jennifer (Mike) Smith. She was a proud
and adoring grandmother to Taylor Smith, Tera (Travis) Jensen, Brandon Matusak,
Ryan Smith, and Rachel Smith, and a beloved great-grandmother to Lily and Charlee
Smith. We cannot forget her fur babies that she adored.
She is also survived by her siblings: Robert (Barb) Eslinger, Rodney (Karin) Eslinger,
Melissa (Mitch) Gum, Tonya (Jim) Finger, Ledie Eslinger, Tina Hatley, Amber
Jones, and Amie (Tom) Eslinger and several nieces' and nephews—each of whom
held a special place in her heart.
Bonnie loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed
cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events and was their biggest fan, always
present with a smile and loving support. Her family was her greatest joy, and her legacy
will live on through the love she shared and the memories she helped create.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at
Carlson Holquist Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Road. Bonnie will be laid to rest at Sugar Grove
Church and Cemetery, in Chrisman, Illinois on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at 2:00 pm.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a woman whose life was
defined by love, laughter, and the deep bonds she nurtured with those closest to her.
Bonnie's gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to her family will be
dearly missed and forever remembered.
