Obituary

Carl "Miles" Carlson, age 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Beacon Hill Community in Lombard, Illinois. Miles leaves his beloved wife of 65 years, Marlys Lillehaugen Carlson; two daughters, Kathleen (Terry) Schnell and Kristine (Timothy) Edison; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Lindsey) Schnell, Kari (Russell) Soper, David (Kimberly) Schnell, Laura (Benjamin) Kallen, Ethan (Rachel) Schnell and Hannah Edison; four great-grandchildren, Theodore David and William Henry Schnell, Timothy James (TJ) Soper and his little sister, Emma Kristine, due on January 25, 2019; numerous nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Miles was the son of Carl and Hannah Carlson. A veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his service as a medic. After returning from Korea, Miles received a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Education from the University of North Dakota and began his career teaching Industrial and Graphic Arts. Miles and his family moved to Joliet in 1965 where he taught at Joliet West High School until his retirement in 1989. With a camera strapped around his neck, Miles captured the memories of a lifetime through his love of photography. He also loved music and over the years directed choirs and shared his deep, rich, baritone, solo voice. A man of faith, he volunteered in his church and community. He was a devoted family-man, accomplished handyman and proud Norwegian. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Peace Lutheran Church, 21W500 Butterfield Rd., Lombard, IL, 60148, Pastor Marty Hufford officiating. A Memorial Gathering for friends and family will take place at the church prior to the service starting at 1:00 pm. Miles will be laid to rest with military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org/donate).
