Dorothy C.
Almberg
October 26, 1924 – August 20, 2024
Dorothy C. Almberg (née Anderson), 99, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, at
Lightways Hospice Home, following a stroke just one week prior.
Dorothy was born in Chicago to Axel and Wilhelmina Anderson. She graduated from Steinmetz
High School and began her career as a secretary at Hartford Insurance. During World War II, she
contributed to the war effort by working at Douglas Aircraft Co. Dorothy married her beloved
husband, Norman Almberg, and moved to Joliet, where they raised their four children and built a
life full of love and dedication.
She was the cherished mother of Ann (Paul) Abraytis, Frances (Walter) Kukkonen, Steve
(Laurie) Almberg, and Mark (Sarah Staggs) Almberg. Dorothy's legacy continues through her
nine grandchildren: Savannah Abraytis; John (Kristen) Kukkonen; James (Brooklyn) Kukkonen;
Lori (David) Shelton; Paul Kukkonen; Anders (Caroline) Almberg; Erik Almberg; Emily (Mike
O'Connell) Almberg; and Kirsten (Eric Sanchez) Almberg. She also leaves behind ten great-
grandchildren: Colten, Kyler, Wesley, Miles, and Liam Kukkonen; Porter Shelton; Maeve
O'Connell; and Mateo, Emma, and Aria Sanchez. Dorothy was also deeply loved by many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Norman Almberg (1990); her brother
Theodore Anderson; and her sister Elsie Matyas.
Dorothy was a vibrant member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for over seven decades, where
her spirit and faith shone brightly. Her active life also included part-time work at Hartford and
several other businesses and a 17-year volunteer role at Silver Cross Hospital. Known for her
great sense of humor and a seemingly endless supply of funny anecdotes, Dorothy cherished her
time with family, friends, and neighbors. She had a special affection for animals, particularly
dogs and horses, and always enjoyed dressing sharply.
Visitation will be held at Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black
Rd., on Tuesday, August 27, from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. A service celebrating Dorothy's life will take
place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 412 E. Benton St., on Wednesday, August 28, at 11:00
