Departed from this world to reunite with his only love Margie on Friday, April 22, 2022, at age 87. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Edwin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margarita, his parents Edward and Katherine Plunge, his mother Lillie Eller, and sister Patricia Epperson.
Remaining to keep him alive in our hearts are his children: Robert (Suzan) Hendry, Michael (Christine) Hendry, Paul (Jayme)Hendry, and Elizabeth (Jack) Harvey; brother Hugh Hendry, sisters Aileen Abrams and June Scuito; as well as his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was born and grew up in a time of much turmoil and strife in our country's history, and was diligent in his schooling (JTHS 1952). He served his country well and honorably in the United States Navy from 1952-1956 as an Aviation Ordnanceman Petty Officer Second Class, and in the Navy Reserve from 1956-1960. After leaving the service, he was employed at Champion Machinery and then at Commonwealth Edison, where he attained Master Mechanic Craftsman accreditation and served as Chief Union Steward for IBEW Local 1460 until his retirement at age 60.
When he worked, he gave his all to the task at hand, never shirking nor cutting corners. His finished product was his pride and the satisfaction of a job well done was his reward.
When he loved, he loved with all his heart, and with true appreciation for the gifts he was given – those of family and friends.
He loved his family, first and foremost: his wonderful wife of 64 years Margie, the apple of his eye and core of his soul from the moment he first laid eyes on her; his children, Robert, Michael, Paul, and Elizabeth… He and Margie loved and cared for them as delicate flowers and as unruly weeds, and what a beautiful garden he and Margie created. In turn, their flowers rooted well, and seeded into many more beautiful sprouts, his much-beloved and ever fortunate grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He also loved fishing, woodworking, fixing things, gardening, music, the Chicago Bears through thick and thin, his crossword puzzles (always in ink and never a scribble or smudge), a beer or two - sometimes three, and any excuse to be with his family, any time.
In all his endeavors, he did his level best, and that was always more than good enough. He could be relied upon and trusted as a friend, and could unwaveringly be counted on to do what was right, regardless of personal consequence. He was in some ways, a man like many other men, yet in many ways a man like no other. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dad's family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the wonderful folks at Lightways Hospice and at Rush ALS Clinic for their assistance in helping provide care for him.
In lieu of flowers, he wishes that donations will be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Honor Flight of Chicago, Lightways Hospice, or ALS Association of Greater Chicago.
Inurnment will take place on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Il., where military honors will be rendered.
