May 27, 1931 – April 21, 2024
John Bernard Ritzema – passed away peacefully, at The Timbers of Shorewood, Sunday, April 21, 2024. Age 92.
Survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Ardene (nee Ray), his children Christine Ross, Carol (Dr. Mark) Danielson, James (Julie) Ritzema, his brother Edward (Karen) Ritzema, his sister Jeanette (James) Vellenga, 9 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents and his sister Arlene (Robert) Klunder.John was an active member of his church where he taught Sunday School, (where he was lovingly known as Papa John) and AWANA. He also served as an usher and Elder at church. He retired in October of 1994 as an Engineer with Parker- Hannifan in Des Plaines. John was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War. John was a strong Christian, with great faith in the Lord. He was a very hard working man, an avid reader who always had the Wall Street Journal close by. John was a mentor to many who were going through personal struggles. Spending time with his grandchildren gave him his greatest joy.
Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Rd., Tuesday, April 30th at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers memorials to Lightways Hospice will be appreciated. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
