Obituary

Passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, surrounded by his family and his loving partner Catherine A Cookas Tuesday, May 23, 2017. Age 69 years. Loving father to his son Michael (Natalie) Banas and his daughter Jennifer (Philip) Resendiz. Grandfather to Janaye "the pigeon", Madesyn, and Avery Resendiz, Kaedyn, Rhyan, Greyson, "Little Joe", Trystan and baby on the way Banas. His siblings Thomas (Patricia) Banas, Carol (Jack) Banas-Hicks and Jean Caliban. Uncle to Tom (Michele) Banas, Dan Banas, Vinny (Mellisa) Banas, Ryan Hicks, Stephanie Hicks (Ralphie Molina), John Caliban, Johanna Caliban and Chay Attahaphone. Preceeded in death by his late wife and sweetheart Phyllis L. (Rehg) Banas. Joe was born November 7, 1947 in Joliet, IL. to the late Joseph and Stephanie (Burzawa) Banas. A proud graduate of Joliet Catholic High School and was honorable discharged from the United States Army Reserves. He graduated from Vander Cook College of music where he earned a degree in music education. He taught music education for 37 years in the Bolingbrook\Romeoville 365 U School district. Music was Joe's passion and the trumpet was his first love. Owner of Men of Brass Drum and Bugle Corp. of Will County, Director of the Mighty Oaks Children's Chorus, the Stars and Stripes nationally touring children's chorus, and We're Family musical group. He was the Owner of Poor boy and Sweets fast food and ice cream in Lockport, IL. Joe shared his love of music with his best friends for 50 years performing in their band The Nite Lites later to be called the Joey B Band. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan, Chicago Blackhawks fan and prayed for the Chicago Bears every day. Joe enjoyed spending time with his beautiful four legged boy R.B. He brought joy to all that knew him and he was well known for his great smile and witty one liners. Funeral services will be held at from Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Rd., Wednesday, May 31st at 10:30 A.M. to St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 15629 Rt.59, Plainfield at 11:00 A.M. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Internment Woodlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials to Joliet Catholic Academy Joe Banas Music Scholarship, 1200 N. Larkin Avenue Joliet, IL. 60435 would be appreciated. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M.
