Judith "Judy" Lynn Lucas (nee Kurbis) was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She left this world on March 1st, 2021 with her daughter and son by her side at age 75.
Judy was born to Lee and Margaret (nee Fries) Kurbis on February 9th, 1946 in Joliet, Illinois. As a teenager, she was very active with the Christian Youth Center in Joliet. After graduating from Joliet Township High School, Class of 1964, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen, she attended Northern Illinois University. "Huskies, come on you Huskies, and make a score or two…." She always remembered those lyrics. While earning her Bachelor of Science, she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.
Judy continued on to a forty-two year career teaching Junior High science. Judy taught at St Andrews School in Romeoville for 12 years followed by 24 years at Troy Middle School where she retired in 2010. She loved all her students and really enjoyed seeing them again as adults in the community over the years.
In her retirement, you would often see her out on her LONG walks. The Rock Run Preserve was her favorite place to go. Judy was also a fixture at Joliet area summer events. That would include Bicentennial Park Concerts on the Hill, Cruise Nights, and every Parish Picnic at St. Joseph's Park where she adored the live music and dancing.
But her favorite retirement pastime was being a Grandmother to Dominic, Emily, Becca, and Jack.
For the last 30 years, she was a member of Grace Bible Church in Shorewood, IL. Prior to that, she was a member at Faith Bible Church and Fellowship Bible Church – both in Joliet.
Judy found humor in everything and was often told she was everyone's favorite teacher. There are several area teachers who have said that they were inspired to go into teaching because of their junior high Science Teacher, Mrs. Lucas.
Lastly, Judy had a special close friend of almost 50 years, Ruth Hauert of Elwood. They had many adventures together, including climbing to the top of a lighthouse via spiral staircase. And then climbing back down!
Judy was preceded in Death by her parents, Lee and Margaret Kurbis; Sisters Janet Byers and Cheryl West and brother Gary Kurbis.
Judy is survived by her son, Robb (Cheryl) Lucas of Plainfield. Daughter, Alicia (Richard) Doroniuk of Lockport. Grandchildren, Emily Lucas, Dominic Termine, Becca Lucas, and Jack McQuaid. Special Friend, Ruth Hauert of Elwood. She also survived by several nieces and nephews.
We are remembering Judy with a contribution to the Alzheimer's Association, https://www.alz.org/.
