Petersen
May 14, 1941 – January 27, 2026
Karen Mae Petersen (Nee Yagac)
Passed away peacefully from this world into the loving arms of her Lord at the age of 84.
Karen is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart Earl "The Pearl" of 70 years, their two sons, James (Genny) of Heyworth, IL and William (Tracy) of Scottsdale, AZ: her cherished grandchildren Skyler, Hanna, Kaylin, and Jackson. Also surviving are her brother-in-law James Petersen (Carol) of Shorewood, IL, daughter in law Katie Petersen, her beloved sisters-in-law Anita Petersen of Murphysboro, IL, and Juanita Petersen of Herrin, IL. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
Karen's unwavering faith, kindness, love and devotion to her family will be remembered by all who knew her. A special note of love and appreciation goes out to her nephew Charles Gilbert who came from Tucson, AZ for extended stays to be at Karen's side during her toughest times of five cancer surgeries over nine years and final days and nights at the nursing home. Also, special recognition goes out to her two fantastic sons, Jim and Bill, who spent many days at her side during the long and tragic ordeal.
She is preceded in death by her youngest son David age 47, who was killed in a motorcycle accident, her loving sister Madeline of Tucson, AZ, and her parents John and Shirley Yagac of Plainfield, IL.
Karen graduated from Plainfield High School in 1959. She was an outstanding secretary for the Director of Technology at Joliet Junior College. Karen enjoyed knitting, needlepointing, and crocheting daily for many years. She made hundreds of exquisite and beautiful baby blankets, scarves, and afghans which she gave away as gifts to friends and family or to the Morning Star Mission in Joliet. Karen read her Bible every day and never lost her faith once during 9 years of a valiant and courageous battle with cancer and the tragic loss of her precious son David. Karen, a very sweet, beautiful, intelligent, and multitalented girl, was also an outstanding loving and patient mother, grandmother, and devoted wife who was adored wherever she went. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren while playing various table games. Karen also loved to do crossword puzzles which she finished completely every time. She will never be forgotten.
