Lupe Bustos, a beloved retired Chicago police officer, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the age of 79. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and cherished memories.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (John) Dobbyn, his five granddaughters, Ashley (Tim) Cheek, Jordan (Jacob) Dailey, Sara, Paige, and Keeleigh, his six great-grandchildren, Norah, Tegan, Cora, Margot, Maddox, and Tyson, and his brother Delfino (Perla) Bustos, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ramona and José Bustos and his brothers Carlos, Tony, and Frank Bustos.
As one of the older brothers, Lupe carried a sense of responsibility and leadership throughout his life. He dedicated many years of his life to serving and protecting the people of Chicago as a police officer. Lupe's commitment to his duty was unwavering, and he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community he served.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lupe was a devoted father and grandpa. He was blessed with a loving daughter, Lisa, who brought immense joy to his life. Lupe cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and was always there to offer guidance, support, and love to his family. He took great pride in his family and made a point to attend their many Irish dance competitions, track meets, basketball games, and various other activities. He loved sharing stories of his childhood with his grandkids and sharing his favorite music and artists with them.
Lupe had so many interests including, golf, the newest technology, Chicago sports, and great music. One of his favorite things to do was get together with his friends, Al Hracek, Leroy Almanza, Tony Delgado, Moreno Bulleri, Ralph Reyna, Roy Santos, Bob Schumer, John (Lupe) Delgado, Al Cech, Rich Salas, Ed Kwitkowski, Tony Kulak, Mike Kowalski, Don Bolek, John Valitis, Carl Davis, Bob Murphy and cousin, Tom Ramos.
Despite his accomplishments and interests, Lupe's greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends. He dedicated much of his life to being the best dad and grandpa that he could be, filling our lives with so many fun memories and lots of laughter.
Lupe Bustos was a dedicated police officer, a loving son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed by so many. May his memory live on in our hearts, and may his legacy inspire us to lead with integrity and embrace the joy in life. Rest in peace, Lupe.
A celebration of his life will be held on May 27, 2023, at 10 a.m.-1 p.m., with a short memorial prayer service immediately following, at the Carlson Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home in Joliet, IL, where friends and loved ones can gather to share stories and remember a wonderful man.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.
