Of Wheaton, IL formerly of Joliet, IL passed away at her residence, Monday, November 29, 2021 at age 93.
Margaret was born in Joliet, December 23, 1927 to Mary (Hayes) and Charles Grabow. She was a graduate of St. Francis Academy and Joliet Junior College. After a brief career in social work, she turned to raising her five children while her husband John pursued a law career. Her devotion to early education first became apparent while serving as a den mother within her children's scouting programs. As an advocate for children's literacy, she founded a summer reading program for elementary school age students.
After raising her family, Margaret returned to school and earned her teaching credentials. She then taught at St. Patrick's Catholic School for over 10 years, working primarily with younger children. Upon retiring, she spent much of her time documenting her family's history. She also enjoyed gardening and keeping in touch with her grandchildren by phone and avid letter writing. Later in life, she moved to the Naperville/Wheaton area to be closer to family.
A devoted Catholic and woman of faith, she was a member of St. Daniels Catholic Church in Wheaton and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Joliet.
Preceded in death by her husband John J. McGarry (2001) and a son Martin R. McGarry (2003)
Survived by her children Joseph (Mary) McGarry of Naperville, Dr. Thomas McGarry of Salt Lake City UT, Mary Hoskins of Walnut Creek CA, and Michael (Cathy) McGarry of Wheaton. Seven grandchildren John (Katherine) McGarry, Michelle McGarry, Megan (Richard) Scanlon, Kristen (Brant) Kapple, Patrick McGarry, Anne Marie Hoskins and Katherine "Katie" Hoskins. Also survived by her sister Mary Agnes (Nog) Muren of Joliet. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Rd., Tuesday, December 7th at 9:30 A.M to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 710 W. Marion St. at 10:00 A.M. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, December 6th from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Margaret's name to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet would be appreciated
