“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”

— Psalm 34:8

These words exemplify the life and purpose of Matthew Robert Nolan of Shorewood, who died on October 26, 2026, following a diagnosis of brain cancer in March 2025. Matt leaves behind a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ, love for his family and friends, and service to his church and community.

“His fingerprints are all over this place.” This sentiment is shared by fellow church leaders and coworkers who witnessed Matt’s impact firsthand. He created systems that made life easier for those he served and empowered those who served alongside him.

Matt served his church, Judson Church, with remarkable wisdom and insight, faithfully teaching and leading the congregation. He taught Bible studies, preached sermons, and provided pastoral counsel to many members. Grounding his wisdom in God’s Word, Matt applied its truths to the lives of the people he loved and served.

Enjoying football, both as a player in high school and a fan, Matt attended several Chicago Bears games and often watched from home with his dog, Leonhard.

After attending Trinity College and the University of Illinois, Matt began working as a data analyst for Constellation Energy. He developed programs and systems to support the company and his team, tirelessly bringing creativity and thoughtful problem-solving to every aspect of his work.

Matt was born on June 13, 1985, to Kathy Crosby and Robert Nolan.

He is survived by his mother Kathy (Larry), his sisters Katie Burley (Mike) and Alice Nolan and three nephews. Beyond his immediate family, Matt cultivated deep and lasting relationships within his church family.

Affectionately known to many as “Uncle Matt,” he demonstrated extraordinary generosity and kindness to those he loved dearly.

The loss of Matt is deeply felt, not only by those who knew him as a church leader, colleague, and family member, but also by those blessed to call him a dear friend.

His life was marked by deep loyalty and unwavering devotion to his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. In the days following his cancer diagnosis, Matt resolved to glorify the Lord in both life and death, reflecting that commitment through his words and actions.

A celebration of life will be held at Judson Church, 2800 Black Road, Joliet, Illinois on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.  A light dinner will be held at church following the service.

Memorials to Judson Church will be appreciated.
