Obituary

Ruth T. Mason, 92, passed away surrounded by family on October 6, 2025. Ruth was born in Joliet, IL to the late Harry and Tekla (Erickson) Mohr.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose kindness and grace was unmatched. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years and the love of her life, Neil Mason, siblings Richard (Bette) Mohr, Frederick (Marilyn) Mohr and Anna Marie (Elmer) Byron.

She is survived by her children Cathy (Bill) Steckroth, Karen (Keith) Schwerha, Scott (Michelle) Mason and Julie (Phil) Hofmann. Ruth was blessed with 7 grandchildren Michael (Carol) Schwerha, Katie Schwerha, Matthew (Danielle) Schwerha, Sam Steckroth, Scott (Emily) Steckroth, Skyler Mason and Mason Hofmann. Her great grandchildren Lola, Annie, Reid, Elsie, Olive, Sloane, Blaire and baby Steckroth due in December. Also survived by several nieces and a nephew.

Ruth dedicated her life to caring for her family and nurturing those around her. She was passionate about her loved ones, her friendships and her flowers. An avid gardener, she found immense joy in tending to her colorful flower beds. Her warmth extended to the kitchen, where she was known for her exceptional baking, especially her famous cream puffs and the array of Christmas cookies, candies and fudge that became cherished family traditions. Ruthie was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed annual family trips to Sanibel Island, spending time reading, working on jigsaw puzzles and playing Rummikub.

A private burial will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ruth's name may be made to the Ron & Vicki Santo Diabetic Alert Dog Foundation, as one of her great-grandchildren is a grateful recipient of an alert dog. https://www.ronsantofoundation.com/donate.
