Vonch
January 19, 1947 – April 6, 2025
Sam J. Vonch
Passed away with his family by his side, Sunday, April 6, 2025 at the age of 78 years.
Sam is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years Laurel M. Vonch (née Worden). Two loving sons David (Kathy) Vonch and Daniel Vonch and a cherished niece Kristine (Jake) Moreno. He was a proud papa to Dr. Racquel (Jonathan) Moreno, Dr. Matthew Vonch, and Staff Sergeant Alec Vonch. Also surviving is his great-nephew Cameron Moreno, nephew James (Michelle) Vonch, niece Amanda Vonch, two aunts, four sisters-in-law and many cousins and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved brother James E. Vonch (2004) and sister Karen Vonch (1998).
Born January 19, 1947, in Joliet to Edward and Elizabeth (née Gentile) Vonch, Sam was a lifelong Joliet resident. He attended Joliet Catholic High School and graduated from Joliet West High School with the Class of 1965. Shortly after, Sam answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy as a member of the Seabees Naval Construction Battalion. After his honorable discharge, Sam worked as a skilled carpenter with Local #174 and later retired from the Citco Refinery. Sam was an active member of the Church of St. Jude. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and found joy in simple pleasures—working in the yard, cutting grass, and enjoying vacations with family and friends. He was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls, and a true Jimmy Buffett Parrothead. Sam was also a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #300. Sam will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his patriotism and his warm and generous spirit.
A private family funeral mass was held at Sam's request. He was laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Joliet.
