Obituary

Sue Scroggs Brown of New Lenox, IL passed away on February 21, 2025. She was born July 28, 1946, in Anchorage, Territory of Alaska to parents' William Eugene and Signora Geneveive Scroggs nee Knutson. She is survived by her husband, Russell (Russ) J. Brown, sons, Mark A. Brown (Kim) of Westmont, IL, Daryl W. Brown (Lori) of Manhattan, IL, and five grandchildren: Trevor, Sebastien, Adam, Holly, and Andrew (Drew) Brown. She is preceded in death by her parents, older brother, William (Bill) Scroggs of Warrensburg MO, and older sister, Kay Habenick of Cottage Grove, OR. In addition, she is survived by sister-in-law Annette Scroggs (Bill) of Warrensburg, MO, 3 nieces, 6 nephews, and numerous cousins.

Sue was proud of being born in Alaska and spent her youth moving every few years during her father's military and teaching careers. She graduated from DeLand-Weldon High School in 1964. She met her husband on a blind date at Illinois State University, and they married in 1966. She was a medical lab technician graduating from Mennonite Hospital, Bloomington, IL in 1967. She worked as a lab technician and later as a dental assistant in the Joliet, IL area.

Sue was recognized by First Presbyterian Women's Association of Joliet as a Honorary Member of The Program Agency of The Presbyterian Church (USA), a member of the past First Presbyterian Church Creative Circle, and a member of the PEO Sisterhood. She and her husband served as co-Vice Presidents and Presidents of the Oster-Oakview Band Boosters of New Lenox, IL. She served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and was proud of her sons: Eagle Scout Mark and Eagle Scout/Philmont Scout Rach Ranger Daryl.

She and her husband vacationed in 49 of the 50 states and especially enjoyed visiting relatives in Montana, camping and hiking in Ludington State Park, MI and touring in the Rocky Mountains. Most days you could find her, reading a fiction novel or an ethnic cookbook, knitting a sweater for a friend, toiling in a flower garden, or doing the daily crossword puzzles in her New Lenox home of 50 years.

Sue relished the companionship of her PEO Sisters and enjoyed joining with close friends to see Saturday night live stage productions at the Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL. Sue especially enjoyed helping others and embraced those who helped her. Sue will be missed by all who knew her.

The family wishes to extend a debt of gratitude to the staff at Lightways Hospice, Joliet, IL, her PEO Sisters, and her Let God Friends.
