Wayne F. "Bud" Koerner

With deep sorrow the family of Wayne F. “Bud” Koerner announces his passing on Monday, June 1, 2026 at Alden Courts of Shorewood after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was 82 years old.

Wayne was born on March 4, 1944 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to the late Raymond and Lois (nee Stromberg) Koerner. He was a lifelong resident of the Joliet area and attended Joliet schools. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and later retired from the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. He was a lifelong and devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Wayne had a passion for golf. Following his retirement, he found what he often described as the perfect opportunity when he joined the staff at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in the Pro Shop. To Wayne, it was never a job, it was simply fun. During his years at Cog Hill, he formed countless friendships with fellow staff members, golfers and even local and national celebrities who came to test their skills on the famed Course No. 4, “Dubsdread.” When he wasn't at Cog Hill, Wayne enjoyed traveling with friends on golf excursions to some of the country's most challenging and memorable courses. Wayne also had a special love for Corvettes and took great pride in owning and enjoying several throughout the years.  He was also a avid Chicago Bears and White Sox fan.

Above all else, Wayne's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was his family. He loved them deeply and cherished every opportunity to be involved in their lives. Whether attending sporting events, school activities or family gatherings, Wayne was always there, usually arriving early to make sure he didn't miss a single moment.

Survived by his loving children Wendy (James Jr.) Murray, Cheryl Hoffman and Douglas Koerner. His cherished grandchildren Nathan Hoffman, Brianna Murray, Jillian Murray, Noah Hoffman and Makayla Murray.

Wayne's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Alden Courts of Shorewood. The love, compassion, dignity, and professionalism they showed Wayne over the past four years will never be forgotten. Their care and friendship made them part of our family and their kindness will forever remain in our hearts.  Wayne will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Funeral services will be held at Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Road, on Wednesday, June 10th at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Robin Caldwell officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Memorials in Wayne's memory to St. John Lutheran Church will be appreciated. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 9th from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
