Passed away peacefully, with his loving family by his side, Friday March 3, 2023. Age 87.
Born in Joliet, Bill was President and Commencement Speaker of his Joliet Township High School Class of '53. He graduated one year later from Joliet Junior College. He studied Engineering Physics at the University of Colorado from '54 to '56 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in January of '62. Later that year he was selected to be a Participant at Argonne National Laboratory's International Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering. Bill was an Engineering Specialist in the Nuclear Reactor Research Divisions of Argonne from '56 to '95. While at Argonne he was a member of the American Nuclear Society presenting several scientific papers at their annual conventions. He received a Pacesetter Award and the Material Science and Technology Division's Literary Award. He qualified as a Nuclear Reactor Supervisor and was the Lead Experimenter on several nuclear reactor advanced fuel element safety tests for the Integral Fast Reactor. These tests were conducted in the Transient Reactor Test Facility at Argonne's laboratory in Idaho Falls, ID.
Bill enjoyed the mountains and he summited several western peaks. After retiring from Argonne, he served as Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, served as Manager of the Joliet-New Lenox Duplicate Bridge Club where he became a Silver Life Master, and he served as President and Treasurer of his Condominium Association.
Survived in death by his wife of 65 years, Shirley (Johnson), two daughters; Elizabeth (Kevin) Hennessy of Oswego, IL and Kay (Ron Longanecker) Winefordner of Sarasota, FL, two sons Mark (Patti) of Wausaukee, WI and Brian of Morris, IL; six grandchildren Erin Hennessy, Jennifer (Hennessy) Shaffer, Drew Robinson, Eric (Daniela) Robinson, Alex (Robinson) DeVries and Kristen Winefordner, and six great-grandchildren; Jacob, Lydia and Anastasia Shaffer, Amelia and Delilah DeVries and Estella Robinson.
Bill requests that kindness and respect be shown to those we do not agree with, and random acts of kindness be bestowed to others without the need for recognition. Per Bill's wishes, cremation rites were accorded. Private inurnment at First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
